Fast Five Review (Minor Spoilers)

I can die now!

THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

It's very rare that a franchise can bring everyone important back for a fifth film. It's pretty much unheard of but this franchise managed to pull it off. I must say they fulfilled a wanting fantasy for every Fast and Furious fan. Now here comes the hard part. Will the fans like it? Given what they've done with this film I think the answer would be a yes. They gave me what I wanted and then some.





STORY

It begins where the last film ended... with Brian, played by Paul Walker breaking Dom, played by Vin Diesel out of a bus ride full of prisoners. This leads them all being wanted by the FBI including Dom's sister Mia, played by Jordana Brewster. They separate and Brian and Mia find themselves visiting an old friend and enemy... Vince, played by Matt Schulze from the first fast and Furious film. He has a job for them but Brian is not sure about it until Dom shows up. They end up doing the job but a double cross occurred that put all their lives in jeopardy. Now the most powerful man in Brazil wants their head and the most talented federal bounty hunter wants nothing more than to bring them all in to pay for their crimes. This sets up one big adventure.

Get him rocky get him!

They end up finding out the real reason why the most powerful man in Brazil named Reyes, played by Joaquim De Almedida, wants their head. After hearing some good news from Mia an idea sparks in Dom's brain. He wants to rob Reyes blind but he needs help from the best men in the theft business. He calls upon his A Team!

A Team!

With his best people in toe they plan the perfect robbery. All they needed was a few cars, drill time, lots of practice, Gisele, played by Gal Gadot, flirting with Han, played by Sung Kang, Roman, played by Tyrese Gibson, lighting up the screen with his humor and wise cracks, the brains of Tej, played by Ludacris, and a bunch of other entertaining moments.

Awesome

During this time Hobbs, played by The Rock, is hell bent on bringing down Dom and his crew. He finally catches up with him and a mega fight ensues. Hobbs managed to grab Dom, Brian, and Mia into custody. However, Reyes had a different plan. In the process Reyes's men kills all of Hobbs men but with the help of Dom and Brian he was able to fend of Reyes's men. Looks like now Hobbs owes them one.

I cried a little

He allows them to go after Reyes and his most prized possessions. The ending was well thought out and very entertaining. In the end everyone gets what they deserved and now Dom has a new agent on his tail. I think this agent might be a little busy though. He may have a ghost he needs to catch.

GHOST?

ACTING

The chemistry here was flawless. This is why friends should make movies together. Everyone fit their roles just like how we remember them. Having them interact together was a delight and I hope they can pull it off again. Even the new people did a pretty good job. No complaints in this department.

SPECIAL EFFECTS

The special effects weren't bad. I loved the Brazilian scenery and how everything popped even in the dark settings. The action scenes were over the top and some of the things they did were unbelievable. It's a very unrealistic film and I hoped for a little realism. I guess that was asking for too much. Well at least the girls were hot...

WRITING AND DIRECTING

The film was directed by Justin Lin and written by Chris Morgan. The writing was ok for a film like this. It wasn't great but it's good enough not to make you cringe. I enjoyed the Gisele character going after Han. It's a nice flip from the ordinary guy crushing on hot girl. I wish more writers had the guts to pull this.

Now that's awesome

Justin Lin did an awesome job with this film. Everything is in focus and nothing is jammed together. He filmed the action scenes the best he could, given the small spaces he had to work with. Overall I wish this team can work together again. It looked like they had a lot of fun.

THE END

This film is a must see. How often can you get all your favorite characters back for one film? The action and chemistry is there and there is some pretty new interesting faces to see. It's a decent film. I don't think you will be disappointed... just wait till after the end credits. There's more faces to see!

Thor Review (minor spoilers)

It's about damn time!

THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

Thor! One of the last big comic book heroes to meet the big screen. I'm not a major fan but know enough to know if this film was a great adaption. I had my hopes high especially knowing Natalie Portman was cast in the film. I was so-so on the plot but hey it's a comic book film. Does the plot really matter as long as the characters were done with justice? If you're a Thor fan then you might be disappointed but if you want to have a good date night and have a little entertainment then this film is for you. It wasn't great but it's far from bad.

STORY

The story begins with a brief history of Asgard. It tells about a war between the frozen gods and the people that protect the universe from them. When Thor is about to be named king they attack and almost retrieve one of their lost riches. Thor being young and anxious seeks revenge and tries to fight his way through an army. Luckily his aging father arrives and saves everyone involved. Highly emotional he does the unthinkable and banishes his son away from their kingdom, stripping his power in the process. Unfortunately he lands himself on earth... now that's cold.

Why father?

He quickly lands himself in the hospital but it's not his fault. It seems that Portman's character loves hitting Thor with her truck! She realizes who Thor is and retrieves him from the hospital. After some conversations with the locals he learns that his hammer has landed some where nearby. He asks Portman's character to join him on his mission but her friends quickly convince her not to go. Shield shows up and removes most of her findings and research. This pisses her off greatly and goes on the hunt to find Thor. She finds him and helps him break into a military faculty set up by Shield. He finds his hammer only to realize he's not worthy!

I failed

His brother Loki pays him a visit and informs him that his father has died due to his banishment. This proves to be a lie when his friends show up and tells Thor the truth. He becomes stuck in a hard place and a rock because he has now grown feelings for Portman's character. Loki learns that his secret is out of the bag and sends his pet to destroy Thor and his friends. Through a sacrifice he becomes worthy of being the hero he needs to be and destroys Loki's destroyer. He returns to Asgard and a war of the worlds explode. To see who wins and who makes surprise cameos I suggest seeing this film ASAP. The Avengers are starting to shape up nicely.

Avengers

ACTING

The acting here was passable. Chris is able to pull off the dumb jock nicely and he was able to have enough chemistry with his co stars to pass as acceptable. Natalie was the most impressive to watch. I didn't buy her as being a nerd but her cuteness made it able for me to forget. Overall the cast did a fine job.

Thor cast

SPECIAL EFFECTS

Asgard looked as real as it could be. That's really about it. I wasn't impressed with the effects here. It's not a bad movie in this department but when you see too many films with special effects everything looks the same. I felt something was a little off with the effects but the average movie goer wouldn't mind. These effects won't derail you but they won't impress you either.

I'm the shit!

WRITING AND DIRECTING

The writing here was average at best. The dialog flowed nicely and the plot seemed plausible. Nothing really stood out but the dialog is good enough to keep you entertained. The directing was better than I thought. He was able to capture the feel of Thor without making this movie too over the top. It was good to know that this film did not fall in the wrong hands.

THE END

A must see for hardcore Thor fans. I must see for anyone interested in action films. This film isn't bad but don't walk in expecting a masterpiece. Iron Man is a better film but Thor can still be enjoyable. It opens May 6, 2011. Go and enjoy!

Scream 4 Review

More like Scream 3

THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

It's been a long time coming for a scream sequel but I have to ask, was it necessary? I think the scream series ended on a high note even though Scream 3 really wasn't all that great. I thought too much time has passed for anyone to care about this film. Then I heard that all three originals were returning and that some new blood will be introduced and drained. I got excited for an all new Scream and hope that it lived up to the first two. I'm glad to say that it did.

STORY

The story takes place with the Scream movie making fun of itself. We get to watch the latest Stab films before the real killings began. Sidney's cousin Jill, played by Emma Roberts, lives in Woodsborrow during the ten year anniversary of the Woodsborrow murders that happened in the first film. Sidney returns due to a book tour to pay a visit for some of her fans when she finds out the murders are happening again and this time they are trying to frame her or at least play mind games with her.

Don't shoot

Things quickly pick up when Jill's friends begin dying one by one in gruesome and disgusting ways. Gale Weathers, played by Courtney Cox, is trying to get her husband Dewey, played by David Arquette, to join her on her mission to solve the murders again. Dewey just wants her to stay out of his way and let him do his job. Gale doesn't listen and arranges a meeting with the school's movie buffs to enlighten her on the new rules. This proves to be a helping hand to everyone involved.

O shit!

The new killer or killers are filming their murders for only god knows why. This leads Gale to do her own recording at the Stabathon movie night. This ends up being a bad idea because that's when all hell breaks loose. The killer or killers find their way recking havoc throughout town killing everyone who gets in their way. Luckily Sidney isn't as weak as the killers or killer think she is.

Come get me!

She's able to fight back and uncover the truth behind the murders and who the killer or killers are. The shocking reveal left me stunned. The motive made actually sense and proved that people can be truly sick in the head. The body count is high and the suspense is all there for the sequel. I didn't think Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson had the guts to go that far. I'm glad that they did!

Blood Bath

ACTING

I'm very pleased with the acting here. Everyone had chemistry from the adults to the teens. Not once did i think anyone was miscast. Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere were the best here. Hayden can play a mean but likable bitch and Jill pulled off the innocent victim pretty well, much like Neve has done for most of this series. Courtney was as cut throat as ever and David still plays the dumb cop who can't shoot if his life depended on it. These two remained very enjoyable throughout the film. Overall it was a solid outing by a solid cast.

SPECIAL EFFECTS

GORE! BLOOD! GORE! BLOOD! That's all I can say about this film. The blood didn't look fake but I think they over did the gore part. Some of it wasn't needed and didn't add anything to the scare factor. I thought that rooftop scene was over the top and not necessary but I can assume they wanted something different. Overall the effects looked real enough to pass as a success.

Party

WRITING AND DIRECTING

The movie was written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Wes Craven. Kevin proves that he can still write a decent horror film and keep true to his characters that he created. The dialog was easy on the ears and the characters were believable for this era. Kevin is truly a writer for any age. Wes hasn't lost his step either. I liked the fact that he kept most of the film in the dark. It made it seem more terrifying. I hope these two can work together again and make another great film.

THE END

I felt that this film was better than the last one. You can skip Scream 3 and go right to this. If this is the last film then it ended on a great note. If it's not then a new trilogy wouldn't be bad at all. Just don't mess with the original. It won't end well.

Insidious Review

This is some scary shit!

THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

The scariest movie since the exorcist I heard. Well I'll be the judge of that is what I was thinking. I anticipated watching this film since I heard good reviews about it. Everyone was telling me how scary and spooky this film is. The movie was directed by a Japanese artist who specializes in this kind of stuff so I figured maybe there's some truth to it. Those Jap directors are notorious when it comes to horror. So I packed my courage together and went to see the film. The theater was dark with only two other people in there so the mood was set. Then the film appeared... I instantly retreated into acting like a scared 16 year old girl who never saw a horror film before. This movie was scary as all hell!

STORY

Josh and Renai, played by Patrick Wilson and Rosa Byrne, moves into a new house with their three children in far away land. Instantly bad things start to happen. She finds things thrown on the floor and boxes begin finding themselves rearranged. Their son Dalton went house exploring when he fell and hit his head. The boy seemed ok but the next morning he wouldn't wake up.

Help me

The doctors didn't know what to do about it. They claim it's a coma but all signs point to him having brain activity. For months they were looking for answers but none was coming. That's until the ghost and ghouls started to arrive.

O no!

Over her babies walkie talkie she could hear someone talking to him. "I want it... I want it... I want it... NOW!" Sent chills down her spine. She rushed to her baby's aid only to find nothing. Then the next night the ghosts and ghouls were in full force opening and closing doors, appearing and reappearing out of nowhere, and playing games with Josh. After all of this they still remained in the house until one of the ghosts got to physical with Rosa. They decide to leave the house and move into another one. Still the hauntings were happening.

The boy is mine

They finally call in a medium to help them but she tells them that their son is being haunted, not the house. They devise a plan to confront the ghosts but proves not to be properly prepared. She tells Josh that he is the only one that can save his son before they get to him. Josh enters his son's world and encounters horror after horror. Finally he frees his son and does battle with one nasty demon. Eventually he is able to free his son and bring him back to our world but he paid a dear price to save his first born.

I want him!

ACTING

I have to say the acting here wasn't too bad. I felt chemistry with the entire family which I didn't expect. I still say that Patrick Wilson is to flat and laid back for a film like this. I never once thought he could do anything to save his family because his character is kind of weak. The medium, played by Lin Shaye, and her crew did a fine job as well. Wish they had more screen time because they brought a bit of realism and humor to the film.

There's something

SPECIAL EFFECTS

The special effects were average for a low budget film. The demon looked hideous enough to be believable and some of the ghosts were terrifying. It was the look on their faces and their calm attitude which made the film so scary. Wish more horror films were made like this. Maybe Paranormal Activity can learn a thing or two from them.

WRITING AND DIRECTING

The movie was written by Leigh Whannell and James Wan. Leigh is a great writer with a hard on for horror movies. I haven't watched a film that he wrote that I didn't leave satisfied. I hope he keeps up the good work. James did a fine job with this film. He is well on his way of being the knew Wes Craven. I hope he can keep up his steady work because it would be a shame if his name falls through the cracks.

THE END

A must see for horror fans. It's rated PG 13 but it's still scary as all hell. Watch it in the dark with very few people in the theater. It makes the experience even more frightening. I haven't been this scared in years!

Your Highness Review

This looks funny... not!

THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

When I heard about this film I thought it could be amusing. James Franco has a unique wit about him that can make almost anyone laugh... well maybe snicker. Zooey Deschanel has yet to disappoint me in any of her films and Natalie Portman I can say the same for. When you have these two bright bombshells in one film you can't help but hope for a decent film. When you add Danny McBride into the mix... things tend to go down the toilet. When has this guy ever been funny?

STORY

As you guessed it this film is a spoof on fairytale movies. It begins with a brave knight saving a princess from being raped from an ugly deprived warlock. Every 100 years these warlocks have a chance to fulfill a prophecy that will give them great power. All they got to do is bang a virgin when the moons align. Seems easy enough right. Not quite.




Geek Hotness

 James Franco was able to save the lucky virgin and return her to his castle. He asks his father right away if he can marry her. His father is delighted and proud but his brother played by Danny Mcbride can care less. There is a sibling rivalry between the two because Danny is jealous of his big brother. One day his brother will be king and have all the riches and women he desires while Danny will...well... just be around.

Pothead

The warlock named Leezer played by, Justin Theroux, returns to the castle to reclaim his virgin. This sets up a quest that both brothers must take. Danny is reluctant because he believes that he will die. At least the man is honest. The brother and his knights drag Danny and his companion along unwillingly. This proves to be a good move because his companion was able to find out that one of Franco's knights is a trader. Once confronted it is revealed that his entire camp has turned against them and is now working for the Warlock. Things aren't looking too good for the Brothers Grim.



Mommy!

They manage to escape but the warlock's minions are hot on their trail. They end up being captured by an evil ruler who looks like an overweight baby. He puts them in a duel for their lives but is saved by a vixen named Isabel, played by Natalie Portman. Instantly Danny is attracted to her and tries to work his magic. The only magic that worked was hers. She was able to steal a very important tool for their quest to fulfill her own destiny. Luckily they bump into her again and is able to regain what they lost. James Franco however wasn't so lucky and gets captured by the Warlock's men.

Retarded

Isabel decides to help Danny and his companion finish the quest that his brother sort out. Together they were able to stop the prophecy, free the virgin, kill the Warlock, chop off a penis, and save Franco from torture. Danny was also able to find his purpose and be happy for his brother. The happiest person I would have to say was Danny overall. Who wouldn't be happy if they were about to tap this...

Boner

ACTING

For a movie with all these good actors I have to say that the acting here was not impressive. The lines delivered here was not funny at all. They had a few moments where I chuckled but that was rare. The chemistry here was none existent. I know it's a comedy but come on. I couldn't care about either of these characters and there were too many awkward moments where I felt I should have laughed or face palmed. Very disappointed to say the least.

SPECIAL EFFECTS

The special effects were decent for this type of film. Nothing looked cheesy and they did not over due the effects. I liked the beginning with the cartoon montage of Danny and his companion escaping a band of midgets. It was amusing for the most part. I just wished it kept that tempo for the rest of the film.



WRITING AND DIRECTING

The writing here is terrible. The story did not seem to flow right and it felt like it was missing a few things. 90 percent of the jokes and antics are not funny at all. I wanted to face palm over a hundred times watching this garbage. Danny Mcbride isn't a funny guy and it shows big time here. The directing however was decent. David Gordon Green, saved this film with his bright colors and action sequences. At least someone knew what the hell they were doing.

I still want the throne

Limitless Review

Why?

THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

March is a good month for risky movies. In the past years movies like Panic room, Phone booth, 300, and a bunch of other odd movies has been released, making March an interesting movie month. It's like a preshow before the actual event. The preshows no one really cares about but usually is watched to get amped for the actually show and/or because the person is  slightly bored. Limitless is no exception here. It's not a boring movie but it's not all that fun either unless you know math, the body, and how quickly shit can hit the fan. The last one we know all to well but the first two you need to go to school for.

STORY

Eddie, played by Bradley Cooper, is a struggling writer trying to get his book contract up and running. He's facing money obstacles that a lot of writers go through. His girlfriend, played by Abbie Cornish, dumped him because he was a loser. She claimed to love him but sense he couldn't keep himself together she leaves him high and dry, looking like he wants to kill himself. Instead he bumps into his ex brother in law who use to be a drug dealer. Turns out he still is and wants to help his former bro in law get his act together. He feeds him one pill and within seconds he becomes the new Einstein. Not just any Einstein but an attractive, wife banging, girl stealing, and money making motherf**cker. You know every man's dream.

Nice modeling shot!

During this process he's able to win back his gold digging girlfriend and make his way to the top of the finance business. He attracts the attention of Carl Van Loon, played by Robert De Niro. He's impressed with Eddie's style but knows something is up. He begins testing him but Eddie learns he can't do this stuff without his pills. He tries desperately looking for any loose pills while becoming very ill. He is also dealing with a loan shark that accidentally took a pill and became addicted to it. He also finds himself stalked by a mystery man who is hell bent on getting those pills, even if he has to kill everyone he knows. Those pills turned out to be worse than that Lord of the Rings' ring. They were truly precious.

E pill?

Eventually he gets another stash and gets back on track. He smartens up and hires new pharmacists to make him his own permanent stash. He also starts working for Carl and starts to merge with another finance company. He learns that the CEO is also on the very same pills and that he is the one behind his stalking. The CEO has the pills stolen from Eddie when he wasn't looking. This was a very bad time because The loan shark was able to find him and almost put Eddie's life to an end. Luckily Eddie was able to get a fresh batch, in a very disturbing way that will make your stomach turn, to save his life. With his own line of pills he was able to smarten all the way up to run for the senate but it looked like Carl was one step ahead. Carl wanted to give him a deal that he couldn't refuse but Eddie proved that he was still one step ahead. He was able to make the pill Limitless! Needless to say Carl was not very happy.

He lives?

ACTING

The acting here was blah. I couldn't feel for any of the characters including Bradley's. He felt a little off and didn't seem to fit the role. His chemistry with people was not limitless and it seemed the people that kept the movie together was Robert De Niro and the loan shark, played by Andrew Howard. These two were the best part of the movie and were able to keep me interested. The others didn't do so well. A movie needs chemistry to succeed and this lacks a lot of it.

Stupid!

SPECIAL EFFECTS

If you want to call looking through a crystal ball a special effect then this movie kicks ass. I didn't like much of the film's cinematography and the lighting was dull. Nothing real special happens in this department but this movie wasn't made to blow your eyes away. Now that I think about it why was this movie made? Anyone know?

WRITING AND DIRECTING

The movie was written by Leslie Dixon and directored by Neil Burger. The writing was ok when it came to dialog but there are too many plot holes that can't be ignored. Like why didn't Eddie payback the money when he had it all along? Why would anyone want back a gold digging female? How come no one else ever thought about making the pill stick like Eddie did? Too many plot holes for a movie like this.

I got my gold digger back

The directing was ok. Nothing really special. Neil seems like an average director that did a good enough job. Everything seems to be in focus and the camera work isn't a distraction. At least he knows he did a fine job. The others should be ashamed.

THE END

If you want to waste your money on it then go ahead and see it. If not wait for video or download. It's the type of movie you can enjoy seeing once at home from Netflix. Paying for ownership would be silly. No one will care about this movie less than 6 months from now. Hell, maybe even 5 mins. I know I will.

SPECIAL EFFECTS

What special effects? There was none other than the perfect lighting and bright colors. This is a low budget film so nothing special happened here but if you're into the lighting and photography of the business give this movie a view. You might learn something.

WRITING AND DIRECTING

The movie was written and directed by Thomas McCarthy. The dialog here was pretty decent. There were some natural funny one liners by the experienced cast but I felt that the younger ones couldn't keep pace. The writing was meant to be dramatic but It felt rushed. He may need work in this department but his directing was acceptable. You won't notice much of his mistakes but some shots were out of focus and his timing was off. This movie suffered from awkward jump points that made this film seem unfinished. He did a good job but you can tell it needs more work.

THE END

I would say give it a view. It made me laugh at points and I thought the story was pretty believable. If you're a fan of Paul then watch it. He gives the best performance out of all of them. This movie is up there with Juno and I think it will get it's just do. Remember this film is suppose to be based on reality so forgive some of the flat performances. That's how they are suppose to act.

Why does this picture look so wrong?

THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

I was originally suppose to review the movie screening of Unknown. Well to make a long story short... it didn't happen. But this was a blessing in disguise. Not only did I get to see a very good movie but got to meet a very cool person. The movie Win Win I never heard of let alone cared about it. It won at the Sundance Film Festival and is rumored to be a future Oscar contender. When I heard that I was all for this movie. I'm so glad that I did because this film was better than I ever hoped for.

STORY

The movie begins with Mike, played by Paul Giamatti, jogging in what looks like hell. You see he's a broke lawyer trying to make ends meet so his family doesn't look at him as a disgrace. He sees an opportunity to make things easier for his family but it means he has no choice but to use an old man named Leo, played by Burt Young, for his money. Luckily his grandson Kyle, played by Alex Shaffer changed Mike's point of view.

Father son relationship?

You see Alex isn't just his grandson but a very good wrestler. Mike is a wrestling coach and uses Kyle's ability to better himself and his team. His wife, played by Amy Ryan, thinks that he's a weirdo and rightfully so. They begin to bond in the movie that I couldn't help but smile at. It was like she got a son that she never had.

He's my son now!

 
He kicks everyone's butt until the dreaded mother returns. She is a recovering drug addict who wants her son back and her granddad's love... or money. The son knows what she is up to and is very reluctant on living with her again. Mike and his friends come up with a solution that will solve everyone's problem. One problem though... None of them actually wants what's on the table. As I thought about the story and it's characters I can understand why everyone was at a stand still. Sense this movie has yet to find a wide release I won't give away spoilers but this film is worth the extra bucks.

ACTING

The chemistry here was very good. Everyone played there part well. At first I thought Alex and Bobby's character were a little flat but as the movie goes on you realize that's part of their character. Alex is portraying a disturbed little boy so you can't help but feel for him. Bobby's character  you can't help but laugh at him. Overall the performances were solid, that made this film well worth the watch.
