Super 8 Review

Sounds like a porno
THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

Super 8 huh. It sounds like a porno. Luckily it wasn't. It's a JJ Abrams film about a mystery alien, monster, or only god knows what type of creature that is terrorizing a small town. When I first heard about this film I was thinking a Cloverfield sequel but it turned out to be a stand alone film. The mystery around this film was its only saving grace, so when the film was released you know they had to deliver. When it comes to acting and telling a story they did but when you see one alien movie, you've seen them all. I have to say I was impressed with the actors and flow of the film but was disappointed overall because it brought nothing new to the alien genre.

STORY

The story begins with the death of Joe's mother, played by Joel Courtney. It turns out that his friends need him to do their movie but they think he won't now because of the death of his mother. The father has a hard time dealing with this and puts the guy responsible in jail. This doesn't stop Joel's commitment to the film and proceeds none the less. It comes to his surprise that the lead actress is the daughter of the man that killed his mother. Her beauty over comes him and he falls in love instantly. During the filming it looked as if she captured the hearts of everyone including the audience.

O crap!

Soon tragedy strikes and the children witness a train derail. They are told not to mention any of it or bad things will happen to them and their family. They decide to heed the warnings and keep their mouths shut but the military made their presence known. Soon people and electronic devices are disappearing. People are starting to think that another war is happening and the sheriff is having a hard time keeping the people calm. That is until he over hears a radio transmission from the Air Force describing the situation. He instantly demands answers but finds himself locked up.

Meanwhile the children are having problems of their own. Two of them are fighting over the same girl and they all are trying to figure out what was on the train. Their footage uncovers the truth and now it's up to them to find out what it exactly wants. This sends them on an adventure that put their young lives in peril. I would explain more but that will only give away the mystery and fun behind the film. I'm sure the theater isn't too far from your home. Check it out and find out the mystery for yourself.

ACTING

The acting here was the best part of the movie. It truly felt like you were watching a bunch of kids being themselves. The chemistry was on point for the children and the adults. I was blown away by how talented this cast really was. They all have bright futures ahead of them.

Please don't take us!
SPECIAL EFFECTS

The special effects where on point for this type of film. Nothing looked fake except for the monster. You could tell it was CGI and I was not impressed one bit. Everything else was fine from the lighting to the explosions but that monster just bugged me. I was expecting something more but they gave me what I already seen. The only low point of the movie.

The future
WRITING AND DIRECTING

It was written and directed by JJ Abrams. He did a great job with the story and flow of the film. I loved how he kept the children the sole heart of the story and didn't expose too much violence. He is one of the best directors in the business and this movie continues his good work. I just hope next time he can be more original and less repetitive. After awhile it starts to get sickening. Maybe taking a stab at another genre could do the trick.

He won't hurt me?

THE END

It's not a bad film. The acting is great and the story isn't too bad. It's the let down that bothered me. They didn't deliver from my point of view. I recommend waiting for video but if you can't then watching it at the theater shouldn't be a problem. It's one of those movies that you can only see once. It won't bring you back for a second viewing unless you want to see how good the actors were when they were young. They are the only enjoyable part of the film.
