X - MEN First Class Review

Preboot... Yes!

THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

Let's see. Where do I begin? Ah yes... is this a reboot, a remake, or a prequel? Well I wish this was a remake because it would have been a great introduction. Too bad it's a prequel full of continuity errors. That can be forgiven because this movie was excellent. Way better than the X Men 3 and Wolverine Origins. I walked in not expecting much but after watching the first few minutes I knew that I was watching something special. Dear I say the best prequel that's ever been made? Yes, because from my point of view I haven't seen anything better.

STORY

It begins where the first X Men started... during the holocaust. This time it goes in deeper. Erik, played by Michael Fassbender, is being tested by an evil scientist named Sebastian Shaw, played by Kevin Bacon. He wants to see how powerful Erik really is. The young Erik can't do as he wishes and puts his mother in the cross fire. Still he can't make it work. Shaw being upset kills the mother which awakes the power within. It also made an enemy for life.

Young Magneto

Xavier, played by James McAvoy, is leading a better life. He meets a young Mystique, played by Jennifer Lawrence, that makes her presence known. They become instant friends and even become roommates. She is having a hard time being herself and wishes that she was normal. Xavier tries to convince her otherwise but even he can't come to tell her that looks does matter. Her appearance comes in real handy when Mactaggert, played by Rose Byrne, came to Xavier for help.

Classy lady

During her undercover she encountered the hellfire group. What she saw blew her mind and needed the help of an expert. Xavier had to come clean about his ability in order to gain their trust. They immediately put them to work with another mutant named Hank, played by Nicholas Hurt. Immediately Hank and Mystique hit it off. They need to locate Shaw because he plans on bringing nuclear war to the late 1960s. Once found they head on with a full head of steam. This proves to be a bad idea for two reasons. 1. Shaw has another telepath on board that is blocking Xavier 2. Magneto is doing a better job than they are!

Xavier and Erik quickly join forces due to their common enemy. They recruit a short list of mutants that help them with their problem.

Future badass!

Quickly the sides are being drawn between Xavier and Erik. Some agree with Erik while others want to drink the same juice of Xavier. This comes to head when Shaw pays a visit and kills everyone in sight including one of their own. Erik convinces Xavier to train the first X Men to avenge the death of their friend and stop Shaw. This leads to one of the best suspenseful films this decade. So good you have to see it to believe it.

My bad

ACTING

Chemistry. That's something a lot of movies lack but not this film. Everyone feeds off each other like leeches. Kevin Bacon was believable as the main villain. He never went over the top and still remained a cold hearted bastard. I loved Michael's job as Magneto. He pulled off all the emotions needed to make you feel for the character. I have to say the actors who played the characters here did a better job than the first group. It's like you truly are watching friends and foes. Great job here!

SPECIAL EFFECTS

The special effects aren't bad at all. Most of it looks real enough but in some scenes you can tell it's CGI. It's not enough to distract and some probably won't even notice. I loved the makeup for the characters. Mystique looks crisp and define and beast looks like a real blue beast. The film was able to capture the 60s very well which surprised me. This film definitely maintains a special effect.

He was the shit!

WRITING AND DIRECTING

The film was directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by himself and Jane Goldman. Matthew has never disappointed me with his films and he didn't start now. He did a better job than Nolan did for the Dark Knight and that says something. The writing was top notch and everything seemed right on target. The story flowed nicely and nothing felt rushed. They put together one of the best prequels (now being called a PREBOOT, Prequel and Reboot combined) ever. This team put a lot of work into it and it shows with a glowing radiance.

Great cast!
THE END

Get up and go see it! You won't be disappointed. One of the best films this summer. The quality here will be hard to beat. It truly is first class!
