The Green Hornet Review

You have to be joking right?
THE MOVIE: CRITIC'S TAKE

When I first saw the preview I thought that this movie was going to be bad. The preview didn't seem appealing to me despite it's slick look. I didn't think Jay Chou had enough acting chops to pull off this role. Looks are deceiving and I'm glad that I saw this film. It's better than I ever thought it would be.

Nice costumes!

STORY

Britt Reid, played by Seth Rogen, was a screw-up since he was a child. His father is a major douche bag and treated him like he was one of his employees. The father showed his malice by ripping off the head of his favorite super hero toy. As he grew up he maintained the role of being the screw-up by sleeping with all kinds of women, spending his father's fortune, and becoming a drinker. He was completely oblivious to what was happening around him.

Los Angeles had become a very dangerous and violent city ruled by a crime boss by the name of Chudnosky, played by Christopher Waltz. Chudnosky managed to conquer the streets by being trigger happy and having a short but calm temper. Britt took control of his father's newspaper due to his death. It's safe to say that Britt had no clue what he was doing.

Strip please?

He fired most of his employees but managed to rehire one. Kato, played by Jay Chou. The reason? He made great coffee! O yeah and that he's a weapon specialist, knows a whole lot of martial arts, and can pimp out any ride he desires. This gives Britt a purpose in life and wants to use Kato's special talents along with his father's newspaper to help the struggling city of LA. The tag team duo that will later be called The Green Hornet is formed.

2011 Style

After making a name for themselves they finally got the attention of Chudnosky. They put a hurting on his business and he goes on a rampage killing anyone who is wearing green. After some soul searching he decides to pick up his own alter ego called bloodchudsky. Meanwhile, Britt has to deal with Scanlon, played by David Harbour. He's running to be the new DA and needs Britt to stop reporting articles concerning the crime in his streets. This is because of the deal he made with Chudnosky. After Britt refuses he hires the green hornet to kill Britt and keep his deal with the devil underwraps. It would have been a good move if Britt wasn't the green hornet.

His new secretary, played by Cameron Diaz, helps Britt uncover the secrets that's been buried under the rubble of the city. She also provides a love triangle that sends both men's twirling. A fight breaks out between the two that was surprisingly good and funny. She almost inadvertently broke up the green hornet without even realizing it. A guess that old saying is true. It takes only the love of a woman to break up a friendship.

ACTING

The actors and actresses brought their A game to this movie. Rogen is very funny and Jay Chou does a great job keeping up with him. Jay showed some charisma that I did not expect. They had excellent chemistry and nothing seemed forced. The best actor here had to be Christopher Walts. He was able to be menacing and deadly while giving off a sarcastic charm. He was a delight to watch and gave us more than what we needed to establish him as the villain. He seemed to be too ruthless to be in a film like this though.

Love the gun!
THE SPECIAL EFFECTS

The special effects were better than what I expected. Some of the effects were cartoonish but I can tell that was done on purpose. The explosions were loud and looked very well done. All of the chase scenes kept you wanting more but the violence at times were over the top. The car and weapons looked cool and I'm sure that double gun will make its way around the market. This movie looks good but it may be a turnoff for some who don't have a sleek sense of humor.

WRITING AND DIRECTING

The movie was written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. They did a great job with the dialog and the pace of the movie. They never took themselves seriously which made this movie fun to watch. The director Michel Gondry did a magnificent job behind the camera. Most of the film is shot at night and Gondry did a great job capturing its night-scape. Nothing looks out of focus and the action is in full view. I do have one complaint about the action though. Sometimes the action scenes are drawn out too long that slows down the film a little, but this movie is far from bad despite what the other critics are saying.

THE END

It's worth your money seeing it on the big screen. The score is pretty good, the action is fun to watch, and Cameron looks sexy. Everyone looked to be having fun which brought the film to life. This movie is not a waste of anyone's time and people need to realize that this movie is not taking itself seriously... so why should you?
